Graph, Dot, Isometric, Hex and Music Paper

Printable grid, dot, isometric, hexagon, music staff and lined paper at exact sizes.

Grid/dot pitch, triangle or hexagon side, line distance, or the distance between two staff lines. 0 uses 5 mm for grid and dots, 8 mm for isometric, hexagons and lined paper, 2 mm for music staves.

More about this tool

How it works

Make printable paper with a square grid (with major lines), dot grid, isometric triangles, hexagons, music staves or writing lines. Spacing is exact in millimetres, the grid is centred on the page and a 10 cm scale bar lets you check the printer scale.

  • Square and dot grids use whole cells centred in the area inside the margin, so leftover space is split evenly. Major lines count from the first line.
  • Isometric paper draws three families of lines (horizontal and ±60°) that form equilateral triangles of the given side; hexagons are regular with the given side, in offset rows (pointy top) or columns (flat top).
  • Music staves have five lines with the given spacing and a gap of 1.75 staff heights between staves. Lined paper starts one line spacing below the top margin.

Print at 100 % (actual size) and check the 10 cm scale bar: “fit to page” changes every spacing.

How to use the Graph, Dot, Isometric, Hex and Music Paper maker

Print exact square grids, dot grids, isometric triangles, hexagons, music staves and lined paper in millimetres, with major lines and a scale bar.

What it is for

Bought graph paper never has quite the spacing you want. This tool draws the ruling as vectors at exact millimetre spacing — square grid, dot grid, isometric triangles, hexagons, music staves or lined paper — on A4, US Letter or other sizes, up to 50 pages in one PDF, plus SVG and PNG. It is meant for sketching, bullet journals, game maps, maths and handwritten music.

The grid is centred inside the page margin, so the border is even. The tool does not add pre-printed content such as clefs, calendars or templates; use the calendar or booklet tools for that.

Worked example

A 5 mm grid with a major line every 2 cells (so every centimetre) on A4 gives 2,090 cells per page. The dot grid journal example at 5 mm uses the same count of points; the isometric example with 8 mm triangles fits 1,794 triangles.

For music staves with 2 mm between the staff lines and a name and date line, an A4 page holds 12 staves. We also asked for music paper on US Letter without giving a spacing: with spacing 0 the tool uses the usual 2 mm for staves, 5 mm for grids and dots and 8 mm for isometric, hexagon and lined paper.

How to read the result

  • Kind and Spacing: what was drawn and the spacing in millimetres. For isometric and hexagons the spacing is the side length; for music it is the distance between two lines of one staff.
  • Cells per page: squares, dots, triangles, hexagons, staves or lines — a quick check that the spacing is what you meant.
  • Pages and the page size.
  • Files: the PDF of all pages, an SVG and a PNG of the first page. Open in the app loads the settings into Printshop, where you can also turn the paper into a folded notebook.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Print at 100 % ("actual size") and measure the 10 cm scale bar in the bottom margin. "Fit to page" changes every spacing.
  • Keep lines light: a grey-blue at 0.15 mm disappears behind ink but stays visible to the eye.
  • Major lines help with counting: every 5 cells on a 5 mm grid gives 2.5 cm blocks, every 2 cells gives centimetres.
  • Music staves below 1.5 mm line distance get cramped for handwriting; 2 mm is a good default.
  • Lined paper takes a margin line distance from the left edge, useful for school paper.
  • For a notebook, use the booklet tool with the same ruling instead of printing loose pages.

FAQ

What spacing limits apply?

Grids 1–50 mm, dots 2–50 mm, isometric and hexagons 3–50 mm, music 1.2–4 mm between staff lines, lined paper 4–20 mm.

Why is the margin wider on one side?

It is not: the grid is centred, so leftover space is split evenly between both sides.

Can I print imperial spacing like ¼ inch?

Enter 6.35 mm for ¼ inch or 5.08 mm for 5 squares per inch.

Can I change the colours?

Yes — any #rrggbb colour for normal and major lines.
